In addition to talking about the significance of Muharam and the Day of Ashura, Dr. Ataie also talk about having love for Ahlul Bayt (the holy family of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)). Muharram, the first month on the Islamic calendar, begins on Monday, August 9. Please plan to fast on the Thursday, August 19 - the sacred day of Ashura - as well as the day before or after. The month of Muharram is considered special by all Muslims and is one of the four sacred months of the year, which brings with it the day of Ashura, or the “Tenth day” of the month, when fasting is recommended (with or without the addition of a day prior or after). This talk was delivered at the Muslim Community Center - East Bay (MCC East Bay) in Pleasanton, California on August 14, 2021. Following the Prophetic tradition, MCC invites all East Bay residents to fast on the day of Ashura, which starts on the evening of Wednesday, August 18 and during the day of Thursday, August 19. Muharram is a month in which we are taught to excel in worship and good deeds. It is a month of historical significance when Noah, upon him be peace, was delivered from the flood and the people of Moses, upon him be peace, were freed from the oppression of the pharaoh. It is a month of great sorrow as the grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Imam Al-Husayn, the prince of the believers, may God be pleased with him, was martyred in the tragic massacre of Karbala while standing against injustice. It continues to be a month of sincere reflection for those who believe in God and seek to honor the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his family, may God be pleased with them all.
