Aerial footage taken on 22 September 2024 of the Waylands wild flower reserve in Darling. In springtime, the Cape West Coast plays host to arguably the greatest flower show on earth when its hills and valleys explode into a tapestry of vibrant colours. Darling has long been known for the diversity and abundance of spring wildflowers that appear every Spring. Darling village is surrounded by Swartland Granite Renosterveld, a vegetation type dominated by shrubs of the daisy family such as Renosterbos and Wild Rosemary and geophytes (bulbs), but lacks characteristic fynbos species like Erica, Protea and Restio. Further west towards the coast renosterveld gives way to Hopefield and Saldanha Sand Fynbos with Cape Seashore Vegetation in the coastal areas. Contrary to its scrubby appearance, Swartland Renosterveld represents one of the world’s greatest treasure troves of floral diversity and endemism. Today there is less than 5% of Swartland Granite Renosterveld left with the majority occurring in small isolated remnants on privately owned lands. The Darling Wildflower Society, local farmers and landowners and the municipal reserves play an important role in conserving these remnants of critically endangered renosterveld for future generations to come .
