Shaping the 21st Century Educator: Perspectives from the EdTech Summit 2024

The transformation of teaching practices in Kenya through EdTech has been significant. From initiatives aimed at enhancing learning experiences to innovations to improve accessibility, the last decade has been one of growth and impact for teachers and learners. EdTech has allowed teachers to access resources, enhance their pedagogy, and increase student engagement. Personalized learning tools allow teachers to customize their instruction to meet student needs, and collaborative platforms have allowed teachers to work together to improve lessons. The success of EdTech initiatives heavily relies on the training of educators. Programs have been implemented to enhance teachers' digital literacy and pedagogical skills, ensuring they can effectively integrate technology into their teaching practices. The Digital Literacy Programme, for instance, has trained over 75,000 teachers in Kenya. EdTech has also given teachers the tools to bridge educational gaps, particularly in rural and underserved areas and for girls. And certainly, schools that had already integrated EdTech were better positioned to adapt to remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating EdTech's resilience in times of crisis. The continued investment in infrastructure and teacher training will be crucial for sustaining this transformation and ensuring that all students benefit from the advancements in educational technology. The recent EdTech Summit 2024 allowed us to talk to teachers about what it takes to be a 21st-century teacher.
