THE STORY OF HABAKKUK: WHO WAS HABAKKUK IN THE BIBLE? Habakkuk was a prophet of the Old Testament, whose prophetic book bears his name. Classified as one of the twelve minor prophets, Habakkuk likely lived before the Babylonian exile, during a time marked by great injustice and corruption in Judah. The first verse of the book of Habakkuk suggests that he was a well-known figure in his time. Although there is debate among scholars about his exact position, some suggest he was connected to the Temple in Jerusalem, while others believe he simply worked in the city. His deep concern for Jerusalem is evident in his writings. This concern is clearly reflected in verse six of chapter one, which contains the only clear historical reference in the book. In it, Habakkuk mentions the advance of the Babylonians, a new threatening power of the time. This reference helps us place Habakkuk historically, suggesting that he lived close to the conquest of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar’s armies, around five hundred and ninety-seven before Christ. Considering these historical elements, we can infer that Habakkuk probably lived during the reign of King Jehoiakim, from six hundred and eight to five hundred and ninety-eight before Christ, and witnessed significant events such as the decline of the Assyrian Empire and the fall of Nineveh in six hundred and twelve before Christ. This places him as a younger contemporary of the prophet Jeremiah. The book of Habakkuk stands out in prophetic literature for presenting a direct dialogue between the prophet and God. In this dialogue, Habakkuk questions God about the presence of injustice and violence, to which God responds by revealing His plan to use the Babylonians to punish Judah. Despite his doubts and questions, Habakkuk demonstrates deep faith in God, concluding his book with a powerful prayer of praise and trust.
