ConCourt reserves judgment on DA bid

The Constitutional Court has reserved judgment in the Democratic Alliance's (DA) bid for confirmation of the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) order which affirmed that any South African who lost their citizenship after acquiring another nationality remains a South African citizen. This follows the 2023 judgment of the SCA which upheld the DA's challenge of the constitutionality of Section 6(1) of the Citizenship Act 88 of 1995. The section stipulates that South African citizens may lose their citizenship upon voluntary and formal acqusition of the citizenship of another country, unless they obtain prior permission from the Home Affairs Minister.
