We explored two ruggedly handsome towns, Ouray & Silverton, and experienced epic scenery with some of the best fall foliage in Colorado. They call this the Switzerland of America and you'll understand why after watching. It was also fun to learn the history of this highway. It was called the Ouray & Red Mountain Toll Road when Otto Mears and his team decided to introduce the world to this part of Colorado. It was 12 miles long when it was built between 1882 - 1883. The toll was $5.00 per wagon and $1.00 per head of livestock. The toll booth was built at Bear Creek Falls and situated so perfectly, you couldn't get around without paying.
