Christian Koloko is TOO SMART to be a rookie

Toronto Raptor rookie Christian Koloko is turning heads. Elite shot blocking, defense, and smarts have him earning minutes early. I see shades of Draymond Green and Rudy Gobert in his future. And here are 45 seconds to show why. We use the term unicorn usually to describe a really tall player who does things that tall players usually can't do. Usually ball handling, shooting or passing. But what about defense? What about a 7 footer who does things on defense that 7 footers shouldn't be able to do? Because in just the fifth game of his career, 7-1 Raptor rookie Christian Koloko did something that went totally unnoticed, that he shouldn't be able to do. #christiankoloko #thinkingbasketball #torontoraptors Soundstripe ID : A7HLOEKSQSCUGMID SUBSCRIBE: https://bit.ly/3NBQUFG Follow on Instagram:   / pensarebasketball   0:00 - INTRO 0:54- UNICORNS 2:05 - 45 Seconds of Potential Genius 4:44 - OUTRO The concept isn't new. Defensive upside is why some people see Evan Mobley as a top 5 young player in the NBA even if he's not playing like it right now, and it's at least 50% of what makes Woj confident that Victor Wem-ban-ya-ma is the best prospect since Kareem Abdul-Jabar. It's weird to call a 22 year old "old" but Raptor rookie Christian Koloko is old by NBA terms. He's older than Chet Holmgren and Paolo Banchero. He's older than his ex-teammate Benedict Mathurin. But once every game he does something that someone his size shouldn't be able to do. And it's this unique, dare I say Unicorn potential that enamoured the Toronto Raptors. And it's a big reason why he was starting in just his fourth NBA game. Christian Koloko's 45-seconds of 2-way play against the Sixers deserved at least a mention for how complex it was. It's not going to make Sports Center highlights, especially when Koloko did something a lot more flashy in the same game. But it's little moments like this 45 second sequence that have the Toronto Raptors so excited about their second rounder, and why Koloko is the first legitimate 7 footer to play a substantial role in Nick Nurses defense since former defensive player of the year, Marc Gasol.
