4 Mixed Media Distressing Techniques by Stampington & Company

Want to give your mixed-media artwork a distressed finish? Here are 4 different techniques to add some age to those pages. Be sure to check out our project page, if you would like to see some of the materials this artist used: https://stampington.com/4-Mixed-Media... Instructions: Begin with a canvas that has been well sealed with gel medium. 1. Stabilo Pencil Scribble along the edges and lightly fill the middle with some pigment from the pencil. Add some water with a paint brush and dab away the excess liquid with a paper towel. The dabbing works best with a straight up and down motion, rather than rubbing. 2. Distress Ink and Blending Tool Mask any area that you don't want to distress with scrap paper. Use a blending tool to apply ink in a circular motion to the edges of the page. If too much ink is applied, you can wipe away the excess with a damp paper towel. 3. Spray Ink Spritz some spray ink to a paper towel and wipe down the section of the canvas. If you would like to lighten certain parts of the distressing, just wipe away the excess with a damp paper towel. 4. Gesso Wash A gesso wash is a great way to bring out the wrinkles, creases, and textures of the page underneath. Apply a very thin layer of gesso to the page, then wipe away with a wet paper towel. This will allow the design beneath to show through. Try mixing these combinations onto one mixed-media piece to create interesting effects!
