Germination Testing in the Seed Lab

In the NS/S Seed Lab we do regular germination testing to monitor the health of the seeds that we keep in storage. Because we distribute seed, we are required by the federal government to test regularly to be sure the seeds we are selling are healthy. We receive lots of help from volunteers. While we use special materials and a germination chamber to simulate outdoor conditions for our testing, you can use similar methods to test your seeds at home! Testing materials can be substituted with regular paper towels, a loosely closed plastic bag, and a warm windowsill.
