Holding patterns and Holding entries

The holding pattern is a specified procedure that you can use to make up time when needed. Before joining a holding pattern you need to be familiar with the holding entries. The holding is composed of a Fix, an outbound turn, an outbound leg, an inbound turn, and an inbound leg. A standard holding direction is right. The Holding can use as a reference time or distance: The difference is that the timed uses a specific amount of time when flying outbound, to know when to turn inbound while the distance Holding uses a specific distance as reference. Inside the holding, you have some speed restrictions depending on the Holding altitude and weather condition. The MHA (minimum holding altitude) is an important factor to take into consideration, it is shown inside or close to the holding pattern and it indicated the minimum altitude at which you can join the holding. You can find holdings in the airways, during the STAR (Standard Arrival Route), and in the Approach procedure. Normally, inside the Approach procedure, you can find a holding after the missed approach. The Holding entries are divided into three sectors and depending on where you approach the Holding fix you follow the appropriated entry procedure. The Holding entries are the followings: DIRECT HOLDING ENTRY: You fly over the reference fix and turn into the outbound turn and follow the Holding procedure. This is the easiest entry. PARALLEL HOLDING ENTRY: You fly over the fix then you set a heading which is the opposite of the inbound, fly parallel and opposite to the inbound, for a period of 1 minute, turn in the direction of the holding side, and get establish inbound before the reference fix. TEARDROP HOLDING ENTRY: Fly over the holding Fix, leave the fix with a 30 degrees track off to the inbound leg for a period of 1 minute, then make a turn to get established in the inbound and join the holding pattern. The turn inside a Holding pattern must be performed with a 25 deg of bank or a turn rate of 3 deg per second.
