The Grand March (Grand Promenade)

This is a recreation of a Grand March also know as the Grand Promenade being performed by The Jonquil Street Foundation in 1997 in the Library of Congress. The song they are dancing to is "Masonic March" by Schatzman. The Grand March/Promenade was traditionally the first dance of a Ball. The term "Ball" literally translates to the word dance. So a Ball is simply a formal dance. This tradition is also the source of the usage of the "Promenade Position" used in dances. The original position was that of side by side not the contemporary v-shape of today which was usually referred to as open position or conversation position. The Grand March is in fact the origin of Cake Walk dance popular from 1890-1910. It was initially a mockery of the Grand March which southern slaves did in exaggerated fashion. Later it became competitive, and the prize for the best strutting was a Cake, hence the name Cake Walk. For more information visit DanceHistory.org
