Unfortunately, as far as I can remember Mexico has had a bad reputation. From an early age, I remember people advising that Mexico isn't a safe country, that it's a poor country, that you shouldn't eat the food or drink the water and that if you travel there you should NEVER LEAVE THE RESORT! There's no denying that some parts of Mexico may be a bit sketchy, but like everywhere, there are safe dangerous places and there are safe places. The idea that Mexico is a poor country couldn't be farther from the truth. Although there are some poor areas and the minimum wage in Mexico is lower than in many developed countries, Mexico has the 15th largest economy globally and 13th largest in purchasing power parity, putting it solidly in the upper-middle-income category. Mexico is a country that's frequently misunderstood, and first-time travellers are often surprised to discover how different it is from how they may have imagined it.
