The Constitution provides the Election Commission of India with the power of direction, superintendence, and control of elections to parliament, state legislatures, the office of president of India and the office of vice-president of India. The voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 on October 16, 1989. In order to handle the election commission's increased workload, the president appointed two additional election commissioners.
