The International Maritime Organization is a specialised agency of the United Nations. It was established following agreement at a UN conference held in Geneva in 1948 and the IMO came into existence ten years later, meeting for the first time in 1959. Headquartered in London, United Kingdom, IMO currently has 175 Member States and three Associate Members. The IMO's primary objective is to promote safe, secure, and environmentally sound shipping across the world's oceans. Hence, IMO's activities include: 1. developing and adopting global standards. 2. promoting technical cooperation and capacity building, and. 3. enhancing maritime security. One of the IMO's most significant accomplishments has been the development and adoption of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). This convention sets minimum safety standards for ships, including requirements for the construction, equipment, and operation of vessels. In addition to SOLAS, the IMO has developed a range of other international conventions and protocols, including: International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, and International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). As the name indicate, these conventions aims to: 1. reduce the environmental impact of shipping, by regulating air emissions from ships, the use of ballast water, and the disposal of ship-generated waste. 2. enhance the security of ships and ports, and promotes regional cooperation and capacity building in maritime security. 3. address issues related to the welfare of seafarers, including health and safety, living and working conditions, and training and certification.
