During the 1930's Welwyn Garden City developed a number of open air lidos, the Splashlands Open Air Lido opened in 1935 and consisted of swimming pool and changing rooms. During the 1960's the pool was rebuilt and additional childrens pools, paddling areas, ancillary buildings were added. In the 1990s, groundwater drainage issues and resulting subsidence caused the reassessment of the facility's viability. Due to the limited use of the pool (12 week season) and the high cost of repairs, the site was closed and fenced off in the late 1990s. It is understood that the buildings were demolished and all above ground equipment was removed. It is believed that the walls of the swimming pool were 'pushed' onto the slab of the pool and backfilled with site material.
