The discipline of Chemistry at IIT Palakkad was established in 2015. We offer advanced degree programs including Ph.D., and M.Sc. in chemistry since 2017 and 2019, respectively. Currently, there are nine faculty members and more than fifty students in the discipline. The chemistry discipline has active research groups covering from the basic science to interdisciplinary applications and our present broad research areas are as follows: i, Theoretical & Computational Chemistry ii, Materials for Environmental Sustainability iii, Synthesis & Applications of Organic Materials iv, Supramolecular & Inorganic Chemistry v, Biophysical Chemistry vi, Chemical Biology The discipline of chemistry has a vibrant research infrastructure in theoretical and experimental chemistry. Theoretical facility: The Chandra High Performance Computing Cluster (HPC), consisting of 64 compute nodes, each with a dual 12-core Intel processor, with each core running at 2.2 GHz and having 4GB of RAM per core, provides a powerful and elegant computing platform for various research areas, including chemical physics and physical chemistry. Experimental facility: We have highly equipped chemistry and biochemistry wet laboratory facilities and various sophisticated instruments including UV-Visible, fluorescence spectrophotometer, high pressure liquid chromatography, liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, cyclic voltammetry, single molecule fluorescence spectroscopy set up with a confocal microscope, mammalian and bacterial cell culture for pursuing advanced level research in organic, inorganic, material and biophysical chemistry as well as chemical biology.
