test run of my first PMA (permanent magnet alternator). at moment only has 3 coils and 4 magnets, will need 9 coils eventually to give 3 phase AC. spinning the end at max drill speed is 1450rpm improvements to make: 1) make a coil winding rig which has a turn counter. easy todo using a microcontroller. also make this driven off a drill motor will make winding coils easier and quicker. the output of each coil will then be balanced. 2) reduce the gap between the magnets and the stator coils. everything will have to be made to a higher tolerance 3) the rotor bearing needs to be doubled up and larger. currently using a mountain bike boost axle bearing 28mm OD 15mm ID 4) increase number of turns on coils 5) increase number of coils to 9 3 sets of 3, each set connected in series, then the output from each fed in to 3 phase bridge rectifier 6) increase number of magnets to 8. a book from lowimpact.org suggests the number if magnets should be even number the number of coils odd. 7) make the stator and rotor from aluminium plate 10mm thick. machining on will be almost at limit of lathe.
