The group, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in bombings and shootings in the past 32 months of fighting, threatened bloody revenge for the attack on Abdel Aziz Rantisi, a co-founder of Hamas. It's unlikely it will be open to appeals for a ceasefire. Suleiman carried a message from Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak that he's willing to host talks between Palestinian leaders and militia groups on a ceasefire. Suleiman renewed an earlier Egyptian proposal that Hamas and the other militants agree to a one-year truce. The armed groups have rebuffed this offer in the past. Arafat blamed Israeli travel restrictions for the failure to reach an agreement. Abbas had to fend off questions from reporters that he's under pressure to resign from his position as prime minister. Hamas has already voiced its opposition to the road map peace plan. Last week, the group broke off truce talks with Abbas and, along with two other militias, killed five Israeli soldiers in shooting attacks over the weekend. Abbas denounced the missile strike as terrorism, appealed to the United States to intervene and said he would keep trying to reach an understanding with Hamas and other militias. Abbas opposes the idea of a crackdown on the armed group, saying there's no substitute for dialogue and that he will not risk a civil war. Officials in Suleiman's delegation said the intelligence chief was also trying to sort out differences between Abbas and Arafat on security issues. Suleiman has been a frequent visitor to Ramallah, where he was instrumental in striking a deal to enable Mahmoud Abbas to be appointed prime minister two months ago.
