Without a clear sense of desirable end states, your calculations lack direction. Kasparov emphasized that the best way to train evaluation is to present positions without indicating which side is to move. This method helps players focus on the overall position and develop a holistic understanding. In this video, I put Kasparov's idea to the test by presenting positions without revealing who is on the move. You'll have 10 seconds to evaluate each position, and then we'll analyze them together. This exercise aims to enhance your chess intuition, calculation skills, and positional understanding. Always ask why a position is evaluated a certain way, as understanding the underlying principles is key to improvement. King safety and piece activity are often more critical than material balance when evaluating positions. Many players focus solely on material, but there's much more to consider. That's why I created the Chessable course "Value of Pawns: Evaluating Material, Quality, and Time". This course provides targeted training on assessing trade-offs between material, quality, and time, helping you evaluate positions more accurately.
