ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG AT ACE GALLERY, VENICE, 1978 BY JOHN J. HUNT In 1978 Venice-by-the-Sea was at the center of the West Coast art scene. But gentrification was slowly making its way and the artists’ studios were being transformed into high-end restaurants or Hollywood movie offices, and the higher rents had already pushed many artists out, like Larry Bell and Ron Cooper. The Ace Gallery inhabited a space on Market Street and I was working at the video studio of Environmental Communications on Windward Avenue, on the next block. Doug Christmas who ran Ace asked me if I would like to come to an event at his gallery where Robert Rauschenberg was going to give a press conference. Following his long press conference he sat down and I talked with him. The tape has never been seen and I recently salvaged and digitized it and put some titles on it. Bob seemed to enjoy himself that day and kept lubricated with Jack Daniels. I might add that “The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation builds on the legacy of Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) who believed strongly that creative practitioners could serve as catalysts for social change,” as it says on their website. They offer a wide range of services for artists, and they may be reached at: [email protected] —John J. Hunt
