Emmy-winning correspondent Soledad O'Brien spoke to a crowd of 22,000 at the University of Delaware's 163rd Commencement on May 26, 2012 in Delaware Stadium on the Newark campus. The CNN anchor talked about advice. Saying she never gives it, O'Brien spoke about her mother's best advice that "most people are idiots" and that those idiots should be ignored. O'Brien's mother certainly ignored them. The journalist told the story of her interracial parents' marriage, how they were advised against it and against having children. They responded by having six kids. O'Brien said she's been successful by ignoring common, but bad advice and urged the University of Delaware graduates to do the same. Instead, she said, their time would be better spent listening to people and trying to understand them, their motivations and their communities, especially those communities different from the graduates' own.
