Having the right pattern for the hatch of the day can really increase your chances when on the river. Whatever advantage you can have in order to fool a smart selective trout you should take. By taking home a sample of the current hatch I was able to get a pretty good match with size and color. It is also a great way to get to know the bugs. The latin names etc never meant that much to me but I am curious about the flies. Most of the time when on the river I don't spend enough time looking at the flies coming down and my eyes are not the best, so with light and the big Sherlock Holmes magnifying glass I can do a much better job. I do this quite a bit or I film the flies and by being on the water two days in a row timing and matching the hatch meant I was able to sleep late and still have an amazing day. Love that. It's not always case that you will need the hatching fly but it never hurts and in this case it lead to THE MAKINGS OF A DAY.
