Shobdon Airfield opened in 1942 and became home to No 5 Glider Training School. The pilots who trained here went on to become operational in the landings of Sicily and Normandy beaches (D Day) and took part in other areas of the war effort. It became an Aero club in 1962 and if you fancy learning to become a pilot of light aircraft, this is the place for you. I visited Shobdon Airfield in May 2014 with the Leominster Photographic Club and, as we had arranged our visit with the airfield prior to going, we were permitted to go into the hangars which isn’t usually allowed to members of the public. We were able to go airside to see aircraft landing and taking off and, and this is open to the public, then afterwards we enjoyed a lovely meal at the Hotspur Cafe, which I can thoroughly recommend to anyone visiting. It was a great day out for us and it’s an interesting place to visit if you are in the area. You can camp here if you want to - details are on the Shobdon Airfield website. Places near by worth visiting are Shobdon Church with it’s beautiful white interior, the Owl and Small breeds park is not too far away and the town of Leominster has some interesting black and white architecture as well as a large priory church complete with an old ducking stool if you are interested in that kind of thing.
