The Beatles: Hello Goodbye (Take 1) (Drum Cover)

The first video of 2024 is an alternate take of a classic Beatles song. This is take one of The Beatles’ 1967 hit “Hello Goodbye'' complete with the opening messing around and first take announcement. The song would eventually be released as a non-album single backed with “I Am The Walrus” as well as the US LP release of Magical Mystery Tour. Under the working title “Hello Hello”, The Beatles recorded the basic track of the song on October 2, 1967. George Martin produced the session while Geoff Emerick and Ken Scott worked as engineers. The take that would eventually be selected for further overdubs would be take fourteen. The first take of the song is vastly different from the released version. The drums are much more aggressive in this take with more drums fill and feels more energetic. The arrangement is sparse only consisting of piano, organ, tambourine, and drums and the coda is extended. It also contains an additional verse that acts as a musical breakdown where Ringo does some interesting cymbal work. I personally like this little breakdown, but I think the song would feel rather repetitive if it was included in the final master. Anybody who says Ringo is a bad drummer should listen to his performance on this take. He is all over the kit, especially from 3:05-3:25. It’s all one, long drum fill that has shades of what John Bonham would play in Led Zeppelin, (which I’m not engaging in a discussion about who is better. Both are great drummers in their respective groups. Let’s leave it at that). This take does echo the drum fills that Ringo would play in the finished version, with different variations of the fills and the same arrangement, hi hat during the verses, switching to the floor tom during the choruses, and little drum breaks in the start of the verses. From 2:26-2:44, the song breaks down where Ringo only plays on the cymbals, with occasional snare fills here and there. Not too many Beatles songs with a cymbal breakdown like this. This would eventually be unused in the finished version. Unavailable on any official CD release, you can find this particular version of the song all over the internet and on various bootlegs. For this video, I used the Moises.Ai app to remove the original drum track so my drums do not clash with the actual drums. This take really shows that a Magical Mystery Tour expanded edition is needed. There must be alternate takes of songs that did not make it onto Anthology 2. It’ll probably be years until a release like this happens, but it would be nice to see. I hope you enjoyed the video! As always stay tuned for more to come!
