Squash Vine Borer Resistant Varieties Experiment Update: My Review of the 2022 Growing Season

The squash vine borer resistant varieties experiment was both a success and a train wreck. Not only did we have some casualties, but we had an awful gardening year in 2022. Squash Bugs and Squash Vine Borers are a constant threat. However, drought, late unseasonably cold weather, early & incredibly long subsequent heat waves, Cucumber Beetles, and lethal/prevalent fungal infections really us hit hard, back to back. Many varieties were considered a success; some will need to be grown out for a second time during 2023 for me to be able to form a concrete opinion on their success as a summer squash substitute that evades the squash borers. Definitive losses to the borer include Lechebnaya & Tatume (but shows reliable resistance.) Potential losses include Dickinson Pumpkin & Zhdana Pumpkin. High performers in regards to borers include Tatume Squash, Long Island Cheese Squash, Rampicante Squash, and Pennsylvania Dutch Crookneck Squash. 1:14 Setting the stage for a bad season ☔ 4:15 Honeynut Butternut Squash ❓ 6:25 Grande Sucrine Du Berry F1 ✅ 7:28 Lechebnaya Squash ❌ 8:33 Long Island Cheese Squash 🥉 9:40 Rampicante Squash🥈 10:06 Zhdana Pumpkin ❓ 10:42 Seminole Pumpkin❓ 11:04 Pennsylvania Dutch Crookneck Squash ✅ 11:53 Tatume Squash🥇 13:35 Dickinson Pumpkin ❓ 14:20 Closing Thoughts Photo Credits: "Curry Butternut Squash Soup" by jshontz is licensed under CC BY 2.0.
