Dr. Jason Storm is a philosopher, historian, and the Francis Christopher Oakley Third Century Professor of Religion at Williams College. Dr. Storm is the author of several books including Metamodernism: The Future of Theory. In this episode, Jason and I talk about the history of modernism and postmodernism in philosophy and the arts, the concept of paradigm shifts in science and the humanities, and the most recent paradigm shift from postmodernism to metamodernism. We discuss Jason’s book Metamodernism, its central themes and refutations of postmodernist claims, grounding theories about human language and subjectivity in evolutionary biology and computational neuroscience, and more. Lastly, we discuss the philosophy of religion in relation to evolutionary psychology, memetic and cultural evolution, and neuropsychoanalysis. 00:26 Defining Metamodernism 02:38 Historical Context of Modernism and Postmodernism 04:34 Postmodernism in Academia 09:37 Philosophical Movements and Cultural Shifts 13:41 Art, Philosophy, and Media Interactions 28:03 Logical Positivism and Philosophy of Language 34:33 Critiques of Language and Derrida's Legacy 35:36 Philosophy of Language and Evolution 37:21 Human Sign Making and Semiotics 40:09 Neuroscience and the Extended Mind 41:46 Philosophy, Biology, and Social Construction 43:48 Cognitive Science and AI Parallels 45:30 Convergence in Evolution and Learning Algorithms 53:19 Interdisciplinary Approaches in Metamodernism 01:05:14 Complexity Theory and Computational Modeling 01:08:11 Evolutionary Systems and Consciousness 01:10:15 Psychoanalytic Archetypes and Collective Unconscious 01:22:06 Prototype Theory and Cognitive Categories 01:26:38 Sex, Gender, and Biological Categories 01:35:21 Historical Contingency and Cultural Narratives
