This is the underground road crossing pathway located at India Gate, where some wonderful photos of the construction of India Gate and New Delhi can be seen. The India Gate was part of the the work of the Imperial War Graves Commission (IWGC) which came into existence in December 1917 under the British rule for building war graves and memorials to soldiers who were killed in the first world war. The foundation stone of the gate, was laid on 10 February 1921, at 16:30hrs, by the visiting Duke of Connaught in a ceremony attended by Lord Chelmsford, the Viceroy. Ten years after the foundation stone's laying on, 12 February 1931, the memorial was inaugurated by Lord Irwin. The memorial gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and according to him "The India Gate is a secular memorial, free of religious and culturally-specific iconography such as crosses." The memorial-gate hexagon complex, with a diameter of about625 meters(2,051 ft), covers approximately 306,000 m2 (3,290,000 sq ft) in area. The shallow domed bowl at the top was intended to be filled with burning oil on anniversaries, but this is rarely done. The suns are engraved on the corners of India Gate, which is the symbol of thr British Imperial Colony or can say that the sun of the British empire never set. Both the sides of India Gate arch have INDIA, flanked by the dates MCMXIV ('1914', on the left) and MCMXIX ('1919', on the right). Below the word INDIA, in capital letters, is inscribed: To the dead of the Indian Armies who fell and are honoured in France and Flanders, Mesopotamia and Persia, East Africa, Gallipoli and elsewhere in the near and far East and in Sacred Memory also of those whose names are recorded and who fell in India on the North West Frontier and during the Third Afgan War. 13,516 soldiers names are engraved on the walls of India Gate, out of which 12,357 are Indian. (Also include the officers and also the soldiers from the United Kingdom). Access to read the names on the memorial is restricted, though they can be seen on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website. Apart from the names of the martyr soldiers inscribed on the wall, there is the name of a female nurse who died during World War I. Most people are in the misconception that the India Gate is the real name of this monument. But the fact is, it was changed in the site of the Indian Army's tomb soon after the country's independence. Otherwise, previously it was named the INDIAN WAR MEMORIAL. Can the design of India Gate be said to be a copy of any other monument or is India Gate inspired by any other monument? The design of India Gate was actually inspired by the Arc De Triomphe in Paris, France. It is believed that India Gate was built after being inspired by the famous Paris monument. Apart from their architectural styles, another common factor between these two monuments is that they both have triumphal arches. India Gate also had another statue of the British emperor Great George V. It has been installed with the India Gate premises. But soon after the independence and the controversies related to the site, this statue was removed and then installed in the Coronation Park. Two days before Independence Day in 1965, members of the Samyukta Socialist Party overpowered two constables guarding the site, covered the statue of Great George V in tar and defaced its imperial crown, nose and one ear, also leaving a photo of Subhas Chandra Bose at the monument. The canopy remained empty when the statue of Great George V was removed. The empty canopy was the symbol of India's Independence that being the British leaving India, leaving her to rule on her own. On 21 January 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that a statue of Subhas Chandra Bose would be installed in the canopy at India Gate. On January 26, 1972, Amar Jawan Jyoti was added as another memorial, which is burns day and night under the India Gate to remind the nation of soldiers who laid down their lives in the Indo-Pakistan War of December 1971. #indiagate #delhi #independenceday #republicday #arcdetriomphe #worldwar #indianarmy #britishindiaarmy #narendramodi #subhaschandrabose #queenvictoria
