In 5 Minutes: The First Month of India Rising Against CAA-NRC

The Wire’s highlight-reel of the first month of Indian protests against CAA-NRC. In December 2019, India began its largest popular protest movement in decades, against the citizenship agenda of the Modi government. In the first month, nearly one thousand separate protests took place across the country, with dozens more overseas. They were led by women and students carrying the national flag and reciting the Preamble to the Constitution. Despite lethal police violence and suppression in BJP-ruled states, the protests received encouragement and vocal support from stars and public figures. They included Nobel laureates, cricketers, musicians, youth leaders, business leaders, Instagram influencers and Bollywood stars: a constellation including Swara Bhasker, Anurag Kashyap, Deepika Padukone, Farhan Akhtar, Parineeti Chopra, Sidharth Malhotra, Taapsee Pannu, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sonakshi Sinha, Irfan Pathan, Kanhaiya Kumar, Amartya Sen, Satya Nadella, Kunal Kamra, Varun Grover and the Bhim Army's Chandra Shekhar Aazad.
