#jollofrice #sketchlondon #solodate Pierre Gagnaire is chef patron of three Michelin-starred Sketch in Mayfair, London. This solo date was honestly a strange one and was perhaps the worst eating out experience I have had thus far. It was also only when I started editing my video that I really did realise that I wasn't being paranoid about my time at Sketch London. It wasn't warm, or inviting necessarily and of course not talking about the waiters and waitresses, but mostly everyone sat down eating. I ate in the new and recently refurbished part of Sketch, The Gallery. It was once pink, now it's lime green. There are other rooms as shown, which are the The Glade, The Parlour, The Lecture Room & Library. Nevertheless, my aim was to go to Sketch solely to try their 'Jollof rice'. I have one word for this restaurant. STOP. If there's one thing I really don't like or appreciate it's when things are taken from cultures and their originations, and repackaged, rebranded and reinvented to make it somewhat more palatable for others. Yes, I know Jollof rice is hella spicy, due to the scotch bonnet pepper etc. most English tastebuds would probably think it's unbearable, however, to call it its official name of 'Jollof' and not even state in the menu, that it is a rice that is 'inspired' by West Africa, for me is somewhat of cultural appropriation, because that is NOT true authentic Jollof rice. It's something I believe needs to be called out when a person comes across such things, because it isn't really acceptable. Or another option is to name it something completely different whilst keeping the same ingredients? That aside, my waiter Stefan was amazing, and really did deliver a top notch service. I really appreciate him being so gracious to me with regards to the pumpkin soup too. I went to have a look at the worlds most Instagrammed toilets at Sketch and wow, are they unique?! After a very long day, it was nice to come home and get straight into bed! Despite my not so nice time here, I would like to come back in the day for afternoon tea and scones. I am definitely putting it down to the people, not the staff, just to clarify ;-) Thanks for watching. Kibibe xo
