Join the experts at Lamps Plus to learn everything you need to know about installing pendant lighting fixtures. Installing pendant lighting is an easy DIY job that anyone can do with the right tools and instructions. Unlike chandeliers, pendants hang from downrods or cords, as opposed to chains, and tend to have fewer lights. Perfect for illuminating your kitchen island or smaller dining area, pendant lights come in a wide variety of styles and finishes. Professional electricians will be able to complete the installation easily and safely. The first step in installing a pendant light, or any electrical fixture, is to comprehensively read the included instructions. Also, make sure that the wall power switch that will control the pendant is in the off position and that the switch in the breaker box for that part of the house is turned off. To double check that the electricity is turned off, you can use a voltage meter on the wires in the ceiling junction box. Every pendant light either comes with a hanging cord or a downrod system. This may be one piece of downrod, or several that can be connected to adjust the hanging height. Some pendants may also use a combination of both downrods and cords. Also included is a ceiling canopy, which is used to cover the opening to the junction box, as well as house the wiring. Then there is the light itself, which may include shades and bulbs depending on the design. Finally, the pendant light will include screws and other necessary hardware for installation. While the screws provided should work in most cases, there may be instances where you will need to source your own. As for tools, you will need the following: a screwdriver, a wire cutter, and a step ladder. To begin, determine the hanging height for your design. For more information, see our video on the subject. Then, trim your cord or wire as needed to match this height. For downrods, you can combine the various lengths provided to customize the height. Next, attach the backplate following the instructions. After this, it is time to connect the wiring. For downrods, thread your pendant light's wiring through the hollow stem. There should be three end wires: a white wire, a black wire, and a ground wire. First, wrap your ground wire around the backplate grounding screw, and tighten the screw. Then, use a twist-on connection nut to tie the ground wires together. Strip about a half inch of insulation from your white and black wires, then use the same twist-on nuts to connect the white and black wires from the pendant light to the white and black wires from the junction box. Finally, carefully tuck the wires into the junction box or the canopy, then secure the canopy. Continue following the installation instructions to secure the fixture, insert any bulbs, then turn the power back on to make sure your new light is in working order. ________________________ Visit our website & subscribe to our channel for more videos!
