This recorded performance is a genre blending composition of Western Classical with Carnatic traditions, commissioned by us and written by our Artistic Partner, Rushil Ranjan. Rushil is a multi-disciplinary composer who’s known for pushing boundaries. His work spans contemporary, Sufi, and classical music, earning him a reputation as one of the most unique and exciting musical voices around today. The name of this project, Māyā, is a Sanskrit word with deep, spiritual meanings. In ancient Indian philosophy, Māyā is often described as a kind of illusion - like a magic trick where things seem real but aren’t quite what they appear to be. In some contexts, it can also mean a "spiritual dream"—something that feels otherworldly, like a connection to the divine. Blending sounds from different genres is a signature of Rushil’s unique work, creating something that feels fresh and entirely new. His work has been heard in film, dance, and concert halls to great critical acclaim, amassing millions of streams online. Abi Sampa has become a central figure in the world of contemporary Sufi and fusion music. As a trailblazer in her field, her powerful voice and innovative approach represent a fresh, global reimagining of Qawwali and Indian classical music.
