Edward Hopper is perhaps the best known early 20th century American artist. As we shall see, his realistic depictions of everyday urban scenes shock us into recognising the strangeness of our familiar surroundings. He was what is known as an American Realist, a term that includes artists such as George Bellows and the Ashcan School of New York but he was never a member of a group of artists and described himself as an Impressionist.
