Kolkata Tram – Kolkata Will Miss It's 143 year old beloved companion, Kolkata Tram

If one thinks of the best way of crawling past the madding crowd with ease & afford the luxury of rail-cars, then no better option than Kolkata trams would come to one’s mind. It is true that their numbers have drastically come down in the era of luxurious cabs and bikes, still then Kolkata tram has managed to brave the odds and thrive in the Kolkatan roads with its same old promise of safe, luxurious and easy going life style. Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) is the only operating tram network in India and since 1902, the oldest operating tram network in Asia. On 24th February, 1873 an effort was made to run a 3.9 km tramway service between Armenian Ghat and Sealdah. The service was not adequately patronized and on 20th November it was discontinued. In 1880, the Calcutta Tramway Company Ltd (CTC) was created and on 22nd December it was registered in London. Meter-gauge horse drawn tram lines, which were laid from Sealdah to Armenian Ghat through Bowbazar Street, Dalhousie Square and Strand Road, was inaugurated on 1st November, 1882 by the Viceroy, Lord Ripon. By the end of the 19th century the company owned 166 tram cars, 1000 horses, seven steam locomotives and 19 miles of tram tracks. On 27th March, 1902 first electric tram in Asia ran from Esplanade to Khidderpore and Esplanade to Kalighat on 14th June. During 1903, the Kalighat line was extended to Tollygunge, the Esplanade line to Belgachhia and the Esplanade to Shialdaha route opened. In 1904, Esplanade to Bagbazar route via College Street opened. During June, 1905 Howrah Station to Bandhaghat route and during 1906, Bowbazar Junction to Binay Badal Dinesh Bag, Ahiritola Junction to Hatibagan Junction routes were opened. Kolkata(Calcutta) tarm service was well connected during 1943 with the Howrah section through the new Howrah Bridge in February. With this extension, the total track length reached 42.0 miles. During 1951 the Calcutta Tramways Act was enacted where the West Bengal government entered into an agreement with CTC. On 19th July, 1967 the West Bengal government passed the Calcutta Tramways Act and assumed management. On November 8, 1976 the Calcutta Tramways ordinance was promulgated, under which the company united with the government. After 1970 the tram routes started to close for modernization of the city and fast and cheap transportation like Kolkata metro came across. The major routes and important depots, such as, howrah section, Bentinck Street, Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay road, Sealdah station terminus, Maniktala-Ultadanga route, Behala stretch, Shyambazar- Belgachia route and many others were closed. Before the introduction of the single-coach tram in December 2012, New Cars was the last new rolling stock, built by Jessop India Limited and a variation of the pivot type, introduced about 1984. Currently Single-Coach type is the latest new rolling stock, one of which has been running since 24 December 2012. These trams are claimed to be faster and more maneuverable than the current double-coach trams with the carriage being longer than the carriages in the double-coach trams. Recently, two trams were completely renovated to world-class standards with front and back glass, fluorescent lights, FM radio, digital display boards, slanted seats and a fiberglass ceiling. More renovated trams are planned. After plans for banquet/cafeteria trams and air-conditioned trams to attract commuters and foreign tourists as well as to increase revenue for the company, one single-coach air-conditioned banquet tram has now been introduced and offers heritage tours to north Kolkata in the morning and south Kolkata in the evening. However, the AC tram received poor patronage when it was introduced, although there are plans for more AC trams in Kolkata. It seems that slowly trams will become a subject on the history book from the roads of Kolkata as in the month of September 2016 West Bengal decided to change the name Calcutta Tramways Company to West Bengal Transport Corporation. Indeed, one would only see it in the museum of Calcutta Tramways. We will be loosing our 143-year -old heritage. But still I’d say, when one looks for a peaceful, comfortable, luxurious, cheap and Eco-friendly transport service across the city or a Kolkata sightseeing tour, there is no better option than Kolkata tram journey.
