School of Artillery

Army Officers, upon graduation and after being allocated to a corps, are required to undertake a Regimental Officers Basic Course – an ROBC – which provides officers with the skills relating to their primary duties within their corps. The artillery ROBC sees officers training in how to deploy and control artillery weapons and personnel to support manoeuvre elements such as armour or infantry with direct and indirect fire. Indirect fire is when the target is beyond the line of sight of the artillery thus requiring a forward observer to sight the target and provide a grid reference and firing instructions to the personnel on the ‘gun line’ as they fire support missions. Highly accurate fire support can be obtained by the forward observers through the use of high powered binoculars, laser rangefinders and GPS equipment. Artillery ROBCs are undertaken at the School of Artillery (SOARTY) at Puckapunyal, Victoria.
