To grow as a leader, learn how to influence people at work. That’s where real power lies, not with authority. At https://joelinspirationalspeaker.com, you’ll learn about one of Joel’s most requested training programs, “Developing Influential Leaders: Five Traits That Create High-Impact Leadership.” As a leader, remember these three key points about how to influence people at work: • Influence is far more important to leadership than formal authority. • Gaining influence cross-functionally is vital. • By gaining influence, you’ll be seen as an agent of change in your organization. The key to successful leadership today is influence, not a formal title. Where you’re at in the level of hierarchy has less bearing than influence—in fact, having strong influence almost guarantees you’ll move up in the hierarchy before long. Cultivating cross-functional influence should be a key part of your strategy. You need to learn how to gain influence with people across workplace departments and throughout the hierarchy, including subordinates, peers, and superiors. This is an important step to learning how to influence people at work. Influence allows you to easily gain buy-in for your ideas, persuading people to be on your side and embrace your perspective. Building influence involves collaborating across functions, creating alliances across business units, and getting to know a wide spectrum of people across your workplace. People will see you as a change-maker once you know how to leverage influence with people at work. They’ll know you’re someone who can persuade others to believe in your ideas, which means they’ll continually turn to you for help with getting good ideas heard. You can use your influence to empower others by backing their good ideas, and by serving as an advocate for others. When the organization realizes you’re an influential player, opportunities for advancement will open up. As you begin creating your plan for building influence, ask yourself whether you’ve worked to build relationships cross-functionally that will help you move ideas forward. These relationships can also help you secure resources for projects you’re spearheading. Ask yourself if you’ve worked to build a rapport with a broad variety of people as well. Just asking them what they’re working on and really listening to what they say will go a long way toward building relationships. You don’t have to become close friends with them all; establishing a good relationship just takes a few positive words here and there.
