What if... we make audacious bets on talent and potential? Princeton University Professor David MacMillan grew up in a small town in Scotland as the son of a steelworker and a home-help worker, became a #FirstGen college student, and went on to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Now he's investing in the next #FirstGen. David developed a love for chemistry while attending the University of Glasgow, which changed the trajectory of his life. In 2000, he co-discovered asymmetric organocatalysis, an environmentally friendlier and inexpensive method to build molecules that drive chemical reactions — an advance that earned him the 2021 Nobel. Since arriving at Princeton in 2006, David became director of the Merck Center for Catalysis, chaired the chemistry department, helped launch the Princeton Catalysis Initiative, and was appointed the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry. He also built a prolific research group that has pushed the science of catalysis far beyond his previous discoveries. Recognizing every opportunity he has been provided, David and his wife, Jiin Kim MacMillan, established the May and Billy MacMillan Foundation, which was named for his parents and partners with institutions that provide educational opportunities to help other first-generation, low-income students.
