Sales Tax Audit- Audit Document Request

Are you being audited by the taxing authority? Don't panic! That list of documents that you received?from the taxing authority...Start getting the documents together. You're not expected to have everything but you are expected to be able to provide your auditor with baseline information. Not sure what to prioritize?...Ask your auditor what they want to see first. The taxing authority will give you time to gather your documents. If you think there is going to be an issue producing the requested documents, communicate that to the auditor. You want the audit to be as stress free as possible. In some jurisdictions, Business owners are required to maintain the appropriate accounting records for at least the applicable statute of limitations. Common records you are required to maintain include sales invoices and reports, purchase invoices, detailed general ledger, exemption, resale certificates, shipping documents, bank statements, etc. These are just a few of the records that auditor's normally review during a sales and use tax audit. Remember, the auditor has broad powers to request and review miscellaneous documents. They may need additional documents as the audit processes. This is the first video in the audit series.
