As Steve Paikin tells us in this TVO Nerds on Politics crash course on Canadian history, there was a roughly 40-year period, starting with populist Liberal premier Mitch Hepburn in the 1930s and ending with Progressive Conservative premier Bill Davis in the 1970s, where the title on the door to the premier’s office at Queen’s Park read “Prime Minister of Ontario.” The cause was bad blood and petty squabbles between the maverick Hepburn (in a sense the Donald Trump of his era) and then-Canadian prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. Even after Hepburn left, many premiers, including John Robarts in the 1960s, continued to use the title. But Bill Davis had other ideas.
