Transcript: [Dr. Maria] My name is Dr. Maria Kyriacou and I am a primary care sports medicine physician at Miami Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute. With primary care sports medicine, it's a very exciting time. There's a lot of things that we're able to do in that specialty. One of the things is in terms of a clinician, we still have the ability to see range of patients from our pediatrics to our elders. We are able now, however, to really specialize in the musculoskeletal disease process, really focus on investigating what exactly is their problem. Having this ability or privilege to be a part of the Florida International University Division 1 football team is really a dream come true. I'm out in the sideline working with the players, I have the ability to go to the athletic training room to see if there's any injuries and have them come to the clinic and continue their care there. When it comes to empathy, I think it's very important to truly appreciate where the patient is coming from. Having an injury myself during my high school, I was a soccer player, had a pretty bad injury on my ankle and was out for almost a year, I can really appreciate the anxiety and the struggle that a person goes through, whether it's an acute injury that they're rehabilitating, or if it's something chronic that they're experiencing their entire life and, you know really need somebody to help control the pain or help them at least live their life to the fullest.
