Living With Water in Suffolk, Virginia

Newly developed and large-scale housing complexes and the expansion of a developing city have caused issues for the original residents of the neighborhoods, whose family members have lived there for generations. Septic issues, stormwater runoff, overflowing ditches and flooding, shoreline erosion, and water accessibility—after a portion of the river was dammed in the 1960s—are just some of the issues worsened by the new developments surrounding this historically African-American and watermen neighborhood in Suffolk, Virginia. A special thanks to the community members of Crittenden-Eclipse, Hobson, Oakland, Chuckatuck, and Pughsville who shared their stories, including Mary Hill, Marie Hill, Roosevelt Jones, Carolyn White, Pamela Brandy, and Kelly Hengler.
