• Atal Bihari Vajpee was an Indian politician, statesman, a poet and a great leader who served three terms as the tenth Prime Minister of India. • He was the first leader from the Bhartiya Janata Party or BJP to have become the nation's Prime Minister. • Atalji served as Prime Minister thrice –briefly in 1996, and then for two terms between 1998 and 2004. • During his tenure as prime minister, India carried out the Pokhran-II nuclear tests that established India as a mighty nuclear power in the year 1998. • Atalji was awarded with the Bharat Ratna which is India's highest civilian honour in the year 2014. • In the same year it was declared that 25th December which is Atalji’s birthday would be marked as Good Governance Day. • Atal Bihari Vajpayee died on 16 August 2018 due to an age-related illness and was cremated with full state honours at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal. • Sadaiv Atal, meaning ‘Always determined’ is a memorial built on the very place where Atal Bihari Vajpayee was cremated. It was inaugurated on 25th December 2018 which was the 94th birth anniversary of Atalji. • It is a lotus-shaped memorial that is built on the banks of the River Yamuna and is spread over an area of 1.5 acres which is beautifully landscaped. • The memorial is surrounded by nine bas-relief walls having inscriptions of poetries that were written by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. • The poems are written in golden letters on pitch black granite and reflect Atalji’s personality as a poet. • Set in the beautiful gardens, the memorial is an epitome of peace and tranquillity within the hustle and bustle of the city of Delhi. The memorial spots of various former prime ministers can also be spotted around Atalji’s memorial. • ‘Sadaiv Atal’ is adjacent to Raj Ghat which is 4km from Connaught Place and it is open on all days of the week between 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. • So if you happen to be in Delhi, do not forget to visit and experience the beautiful and peaceful vibrations of ‘Sadaiv Atal’.
