Akuma: Mortis Immortal (Arcade) - No Continues - 100,593

Here is probably the first-ever recorded 1CC (no continue/no death playthrough) of Akuma: Mortis Immortal, an obscure 2005 horror light gun game by Gamewax. This game was never ported, and it was considered lost for years until its files were shared online recently, making it unofficially playable on PC. I'm playing this using a GUN4IR. In this run I also scored over 100,000 points. Akuma is a quirky game with seven levels, in which you fight demons and spirits. There's a unique "charge" shot mechanic similar to Konami's Evil Night. Another mechanic involves shooting one of three cards during a stage; some give you extra lives, others yield weapon power ups or a minigame where you must shoot this Jester villain while avoiding hostages (who deduct lives if shot). This game has the novelty of being super rare going for it, as well as some...interesting boss designs, atmospheric music, and a surprisingly balanced difficulty. But it's a very short experience, and it seems like there's no branching paths, so it's not going to keep me coming back as much as House of the Dead does. At any rate, I'm thankful this "lost" game has been preserved in some way. This game was optimized specifically for the older PC-based hardware that it originally ran on; any higher frame rate thusly will make the game run too fast. I even had issues running this game at 60FPS. It seems that you generally want to use the charge shot as much as you can; it one-shots most enemies and does heavy damage on bosses. The game has a letter grading system which seems to be based on accuracy. The Jester minigame sucks because it puts you at risk of losing lives, but it is worth points, and likely helped me score over 100K in the run. In its current state, the game is playable, however I think the charge shot is supposed to only charge when the gun is pointed off screen. Here, it will just charge if you don't press the trigger at all. Unless this is actually the correct behavior I imagine that will be fixed in the future. That problem makes the Jester minigame worse, when you're waiting for him to pop up but don't want a big charge shot to potentially hit hostages. There are no health ups outside of the random "heart" cards, which give you two lives back. It seems that most enemy and boss attacks deduct half a life from you. I haven't found any branching paths yet and would be surprised if any exist. It seems like a pretty linear game. The arcade cabinet was unique in that it had a projector system to show characters on-screen. Obviously this special effect won't translate to the unofficial PC port. #arcade #gamewax #horror #retro #2005 #pc #demons #spirits #ghosts #helicopter #truck
