(24 Aug 2012) STORYLINE Fierce clashes erupted between Alawite Shia supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad and Sunnis Muslims early on Friday in the northern city of Tripoli. Armoured personnel carriers could be seen on the streets of the Al-Malouleh neighbourhood, which is mostly populated by Sunni Muslims. The fighting is spilling over from the civil war in neighbouring Syria. The officials say two people were killed and 17 wounded in Friday's fighting. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, say automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades are being used. The latest round of fighting first erupted on Monday. At least 15 have been killed in the city this week and more than 100 wounded. The Syrian uprising has exacerbated Sunni-Alawite tensions in Lebanon. Assad is a member of Syria's Alawite minority. Rebels fighting his regime are members of the nation's Sunni majority.
