भारत के गुमनाम इतिहास को अपने सीने में समेटे सैदपुर के भितरी गांव में स्थित स्कंद गुप्त का स्तंभ व खोदाई में मिले अवशेष की तरफ ध्यान न दिए जाने के कारण भारतवासी अपने गौरवशाली इतिहास से अंजान हैं। गुप्तवंश की आठवीं पीढ़ी के शासक स्कंदगुप्त व हुणों के बीच हुए युद्ध के बाद लगा विजय स्तंभ आज भी उपेक्षा का शिकार है। उस समय के भाषा में लिखे शिलापट्ट भी यहां मिले थे। कई प्राचीन कालीन मूर्तियां भी मिली जिन्हें आज भी संग्रहालय में रखा गया है। एक क्षतिग्रस्त मूर्ति व अवशेष आज भी यहां विद्यमान हैं। स्तंभ के इतिहास पर गौर करें तो प्रारंभिक दिनों में गुप्त शासक स्कंदगुप्त को विदेशी अतिक्रमणकारियों खासकर हुणों का सामना करना पड़ता था। हुणों को परास्त कर स्कंदगुप्त ने गाजीपुर के सैदपुर भितरी में विजय स्तंभ का निर्माण करवाया था जो हुणों पर विजय का गवाह है। गुप्त साम्राज्य का उदय तीसरी सदी के अंत में प्रयाग के निकट कौशांबी में हुआ था इसलिए मुख्य कार्यक्षेत्र उत्तर प्रदेश व बिहार था। यहीं पर अधिकांश अभिलेख मिलते हैं। हुणों ने जब आक्रमण किया तो स्कंद गुप्त ने बहादुरी से उनका सामना किया और मध्य एशिया से आए हुणों को हराकर इतिहास में अपना नाम दर्ज कराया। उसी समय सम्राट स्कंद गुप्त ने भितरी में विजय स्तंभ का निर्माण करवाया था।  The people of India are unaware of their glorious history due to lack of attention to the pillar of Skanda Gupta located in Bhitari village of Saidpur, which holds the anonymous history of India and the remains found in the excavation. When the Huns attacked, Skanda Gupta faced them bravely and by defeating the Huns from Central Asia, recorded his name in history. At the same time, Emperor Skanda Gupta had built the Victory Pillar at Bhitri.
