Rescuing a flying-fox on a back doormat: this is Tafia

Tafia is a 12.5 week juvenile female Black Flying-Fox who found herself on a back doormat in an oceanside suburban terrace. (this age is not common at this time of the year; babies are usually born in Spring, around October, so she is a product of an out of season mating). The residents weren't home, but arranged for the babysitter to open up the home to provide access. I had no idea what I was going to find - a microbat a flying-fox either adult or juvenile, or any other creature... So on arrival, I find little Tafia (tafia is a kind of rum made from (black) molasses) lying mostly curled up on the back doormat. The terrace house was long and skinny and had many places where there was nowhere for a little batty to climb to get enough height to fly out. Tafia is too young to be released as a hard release, so she will remain in care until she can be transported north for release or the batties return to Sydney so we can release them here. Tafia continues to do well in care and is hanging out with Quai, Derek, and Jenner, and the other Black (also called an Alecto) in that cage. Happy days kids... Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult). https://tolgabathospital.org/donate/ Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me. If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me. IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt. The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie. Here’s Jenny’s email. [email protected]
