The hair shaving ceremony is one of the most touching ceremonies. It's emotional simply because this is when it gets real. Once you shave your head, there is no turning back. You are one step closer in the process of becoming a Buddhist monk. This moment is so surreal. I remember there being so many people around. They came to show their support and be part of our transition; however, in the midst of the chaos, I remember having a moment where my life flashed before my eyes. It hits you that you are making a big sacrifice and letting go of your old life. And to be witnessed by our friends and family is truly magical. Words cannot describe this feeling. In Buddhism, ordaining to become a monk is one of the noblest acts. This brings a lot of merit to the person ordaining and to their family. With that said, I wanted to give you a glimpse into this beautiful ceremony. If possible, try to put yourself in our shoes. What feelings would come up for you to have your friends, family, and complete strangers shave your head? What would it feel like to let go of your old life?
