Managing Weight Gain with Schizophrenia

Weight gain is a common side-effect of many antipsychotic medications, such as Clozapine and Abilify, as well as some antidepressants like Lexapro. As someone who has taken these medications for the past ten years, I understand the struggle of managing weight while undergoing treatment for schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety. In this blog post, I will share my journey of shedding approximately 45 pounds, from 180 pounds a couple of years ago to 135 pounds today. In addition, I will discuss my daily routine, including my diet and exercise regimen, and offer tips and encouragement for those facing similar challenges. Balancing the Scale: Managing Weight with Schizophrenia Introduction Weight gain is a common and often distressing side-effect of antipsychotic medications, such as Clozapine and Abilify, as well as some antidepressants, like Lexapro. As someone who has taken these medications for the past ten years to manage my schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety, I have experienced firsthand the struggle of weight gain. But through determination, discipline, and self-discovery, I have successfully managed my weight, shedding approximately 45 pounds. In this post, I share my daily routine, diet, and exercise habits to support and guide those facing similar challenges. Morning Routine: Starting the Day Right Hydration: Upon waking up, I make it a habit to drink a glass of water to kickstart my metabolism and promote healthy digestion. Balanced breakfast: prioritize a nutritious breakfast with protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates to keep you full and energized throughout the morning. Some examples of go-to breakfast meals are: Greek yogurt with berries, honey, and a sprinkle of nuts Whole grain toast with avocado and a side of scrambled eggs Overnight oats with almond milk, chia seeds, and fresh fruit Morning exercise: Morning exercise sets a positive tone for the rest of the day. Alternate between activities, such as jogging, cycling, or a short yoga session to keep things fresh and engaging. Midday Routine: Staying Active and Mindful Lunch: Focus on creating a balanced lunch rich in vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Some examples are: Grilled chicken salad with mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a light vinaigrette Quinoa and vegetable stir-fry with tofu or tempeh Snacks: Opt for healthy and satisfying snacks to curb hunger and prevent overeating during meals. Some of my favorites include: Baby carrots and hummus Apple slices with a tablespoon of almond butter A small handful of mixed nuts Movement breaks: Make an effort to take short breaks throughout the day to stretch, walk around, or engage in light physical activities to stay active and maintain energy levels. Evening Routine: Winding Down and Preparing for Rest Dinner: Like lunch, eat a balanced meal with lean protein, vegetables, and whole grains. Examples include: Grilled fish with roasted vegetables and brown rice Lentil soup with a side of whole-grain bread Evening exercise: Depending on your energy levels and schedule, engage in a gentle evening workout, such as a short walk or a relaxing yoga session. Mindfulness: Before bedtime, practice mindfulness through meditation or journaling to reflect on your day, process your thoughts, and maintain a positive mindset. In Conclusion Weight management while on medications like Clozapine, Abilify, and Lexapro can be challenging, but it is possible with dedication, consistency, and a supportive network. By sharing my personal journey and daily routine, I hope to inspire others in similar situations to take control of their health and well-being. Remember, we are in this together, and your mental and physical health is worth the effort! #schizophrenia #anxiety #mentalhealth #depression
