The Artful Dodger | Brickolini

This Electro-Funk remix of ‘LEGO Island’ (1997) is a tribute to one of the very first games I’ve ever played as a kid in the 2000’s on my old Windows ’98 computer. It’s also a testament to video games in general,’ as this is one of the first LEGO themed video games. This remix as a concept was a challenging one. On the surface, sampling and composing a remix of the classic video game seemed simple and exciting. What I didn’t realise however, was how difficult it was to sample, and mix the heavily compressed sounds from the game. Because the game was ahead of it’s time as an early ‘open world’ game; the sound (including dialogue, sound FX and music) had to be heavily compressed in order to fit on a CD-ROM. In the end, I’m glad that I didn’t clean up the vocals, because the ‘lofi’ quality gives the remix it’s nostalgic charm. I’d like to also note that an incredible team of developers (that also happen to be massive fans of this game) are developing a new remake of this game called ‘Project Island’, in which I’ve linked their website down below. I’m super excited that the new generation are going to experience the video game that my generation grew up with.
