Mount Diablo is only 3,848' above sea level - but the hike begins at nearly sea level so it is quite a climb for a day hike! You start off in the 100 year-old state park and pretty much just climb all day. On the way up you pass through numerous geological epochs and get great views as you tower over the low hills and flat valleys of the Bay Area (when it's clear, you can see for almost 200 miles in every direction!). Finally, the summit hosts a very cool visitor center that looks like an old lighthouse, and just on the other side of this structure lies the Devil's Pulpit . . .
