This is a video of a South Korean two carrier Strike group consisting of both of their Dokdo class carriers, 6111 Dokdo and 6112 Marado. The Marado is just completing sea trials and will be commissioned in early 2020. The South Koreans, like the Japanese have ordered F-35B aircraft for these vessels. It is expected that each vessel will be able to embark 12-14 F-35Bs on each carrier. The ships are actually LPH vessels with a well deck capable of carrying up to two LCAC hover craft to carry troops and equipment to shore.. This s a 1/700 scale depiction. There are no 1/350 scale models of these ships to date. Of the shipsone is made by Orange Hobbies and is a waterline only, resin model. The other is made by Academy and is a full hull plastic model with an aftermarket photo etched metal upgrade kit. I ended up like the Academy model the best. with its upgrade set, it is about the same cost, but the full hull was nice and with the upgrade set you have as much photo etch. The two Se Jong the Great DDGs are AEGIS vessels based on the Flight IIA Burke class, but are much more heavily armed. They displace over 11,000 tons and have the following armament. 80 VLS cells in US Made Mk-141 VLS cells carrying Standard Missiles for ant-air and ESSM missiles for anti air. They also have a 48 cell K-VLS of South Korean design very similar to the MK-141 that carries 48 SLCM cruise missiles and two different anti-submarine missiles of South Korean design. They have three versions of the cruise missiles that can be fired from these cells that range from 500 to 1500 miles. They have two different versions of the anti-submarine missiles. In addition, the ships are heavily armed with 16 Anti-ship missiles in four quad cannisters amidships using South Korean developed anti-shipping missiles with a range of about 150 km. Finally, for Close in work they have one RAM launcher with 21 cells for RAM missiles which are anti-air missiles, and one 30mm UK based Goalkeeper CIWS. Finally, the carry 2 x 3 torpedo launchers. In total these ships carry 165 missiles and are the most heavily armed AEGIS vessels in existence. The South Korean plan to build three more of the large DDG AEGIS destroyers and they will have a total of six of thee very capable vessels. I made these (because there is no model of them in 1/700 or 1/350 scale) by taking a 1/700 scale US Navy Arleigh Burks class IIA model and altering it to make the Se Jong the Great DDGs. I have purchased an additional 1/350 scale Burke BLock IIA vessel which I shall alter similarly to make a Se Jong class vessel in 1/350 scale. These ships are really armend]]]ed more like a cruiser and I will probably class them as such in my own 1/350 scale fleet. Now, an actual South Korean two carrier strike croup ould also contain two smaller class vessels, probably KDX I or KDX II vessels, but there were no models of either. so I am depicting it with just the twp Se Jong the Great KDX-111 vessels. This, like Japan, is South Korea's answer to the growing Chinese naval presence in the CHina Sea and beyond. with Japan and South Korea doing this, adding F-35Bs to their flat top vessels, they have created four new allied carriers. In addition (and you can see a video of it on my channel too) the US is outfitting several of its LHD and LHA class flat deck amphibious assault vessels to carry up to 24 F-35Bs, so in the Western Pacific, add another two carriers. With Australia considering the same for its two Canberra class LPH vessels, the allies will soon have ten carriers prepared to defend the Western Pacific, all of them carrying 5th generation F-35B strike fighters, and in the US case, two large nuclear carriers carrying F-35C aircraft. If needed the UK, Spain, and Italy could each add one or two carriers to the mix. This is an effective counter to the Chinese growth...and points out that the Japanese and South Koreans in particular could add another carrier in about a year and a half each if necessary with the the extra escorts necessary. I believe the South Koreans are already mulling over ordering a third Dokdo class vessel. The US should consider either a cruiser variant of the Zumwalt class vessel with upwards of 140 PVK LS missile launchers, one large 155mm electromagnetic rail gun and two each of smaller EM rail guns and Laser weapon systems for close in defense, Alternately, IMHO, they should consider a US variant of the Se Jong the Great Burke vessel called the BLock IV. In addition, as shown in each of the model groups I have depicted, all of these countries should consider the AEW, EV-22 Osprey, and the SV-22, ASW osprey for the air wing aboard each of these carrier, particularly to ensure they have adequate AEW coverage for each carrier. We hope you enjoy our channel and the compelling groups and vessels we show case here. Please pass the recommendations on to your Naval and legislative friends in each country.
